METCALFE FAIR GETS GRANT FOR GATE PROJECT
-30-
Members of the Metcalfe Fair’s Celebration 150 Committee, Meredith Brophy, Betty Eastman, and Society President John Lackey, are shown receiving the grant cheque from Mayor Bob Chiarelli, Councillor Rob Jellett (Chair of the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee), and Osgoode Ward Councillor Doug Thompson.
Metcalfe - July 7, 2006
The 150th Metcalfe Fair is now just a matter of weeks away, and to help commemorate this special event, the Agricultural Society has undertaken a major project to build a new main entrance to the Fairgrounds.  The design for the new Gates will incorporate the three existing historic pillars at the front gates, along with flanking stone walls and wrought-iron gates.

“We want to make our property a welcoming destination, not only at Fair-time, but for many other community events and private functions throughout the year”, explains Meredith Brophy, a member of the Society’s Celebration 150 Committee.  “The Fairgrounds, which includes the Lions’ Den and the Curling Club and is adjacent to the arena, are a focal point in our community, and we wanted to make the main entrance a showcase.”

Part of the funding for this project comes from a grant from the City of Ottawa’s Economic Development Department.  The Rural Association Partnership Program was born out of the City’s Rural Summit held in the Fall of 2005, where it was strongly recommended that the rural areas should have more support from the City for economic development.  A grant of $7,500 was awarded to the Metcalfe Agricultural Society, to be applied towards the new entrance.

Part of the new entrance will incorporate a section where the names of contributors to the 150th Entrance Campaign will be displayed in perpetuity.  Donations of any amount are welcome, however in recognition of the 150th Anniversary, only donations of $150 and greater will be represented on the wall.  Donation levels have been established, which will be reflected accordingly on the wall.  Whatever the amount, your gift helps support, nurture and encourage the continued growth and excellence of the Metcalfe Fair.  Tax receipts will be provided for all donations.  For more information on how your family or your business can be a part of this Campaign, please contact Bill Buckland (613-821-3336) or Betty Eastman (613-821-2134).

Work has already begun on the Gate Project, and the Committee plans to have the new entrance ready for the Official Opening of the Fair in September.

The 150th Metcalfe Fair will run from September 28th to October 1st, 2006.
